I’ve been there.
Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be a US Marine and a firefighter. I did the Marine thing and then became a firefighter.
I was living what I thought was my dream – even being recognized as the Arizona State Firefighter of the Year in 2017. It was my childhood dream come true. I had an amazing girlfriend at the time and spoke in front of hundreds of my peers at the state fire school.
But I’ll be honest. I was maxed out in every area. I felt like a broken man – depressed, breaking down crying in the middle of the day. I felt like a hollow shell despite the outward success.
A few months into this depression, I realized that I had a bigger Vision calling from deep within.
One that terrified me because I had no idea how to make it happen.
I wanted to become an entrepreneur, to travel the world, to create a life and business on my own terms. The ‘how’ was a complete mystery. Yet something pushed me to take that first step.
For me, wanting to see the world, I said to some of my peers one night that I was moving to Costa Rica.
A few months later, after a series of unexplainable and seemingly unrelated synchronicities, I traded the comfort and safety of my childhood dream job for a one-way flight to Costa Rica.
No real plans of ever coming home.
With no roadmap but fueled by faith, my now wife and I embarked on a two-year backpacking journey.
Traveling throughout Central and South America, and Europe. We got engaged in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. I hosted retreats in Colombia, and had so many incredible experiences with amazing people from all over the world.
Some days we didn’t know where we were going to stay the next night.
But we were always supported, and clarity, or the next step always came right when it was needed.
Here’s what I learned: You can’t stop before you start because the ‘how’ reveals itself along the way.
Each step I took opened new doors, presented new opportunities, and taught me valuable lessons.
We ended up being gone for 5 years. Traveling through 9 countries and 7 states. We lived in 3 states, bought houses in 2. And there’s no way we could have ever planned it.
In fact, planning it would have robbed us of the ability to go with the flow of life and be open to even better opportunities.
Those 5 years of adventure and uncertainty led me to found Abundance Codes, a company that now helps my fellow entrepreneurs overcome their own ‘how’ hurdles.
